Fran Butterfoss, Commodore

Fran and her husband Tom live in Yorktown and keep their Meridian 391 at York River Yacht Haven. Fran has a consulting business that focuses on building and sustaining partnerships to prevent disease and promote health. Fran has served as Entertainment Committee Chair, Dinner Meeting Co-Chair, as a member of the Long Range Planning and Seadog Seminar Committees, and helps with many social events at the club. She completed 3 years as a Trustee.


Carl Early, Vice Commodore

Carl and Jan live in Norfolk and keep their 45’ Herreshoff cat ketch at Salt Ponds in Hampton. Carl successfully raced beach catamarans for 25 years before transitioning to keelboats, he now enjoys cruising the bay aboard Second Star. Carl has specialized in multimedia production for the last 25 years. He has been a member since 2000 and has served as Race Committee chair, Fleet Captain and as a Trustee.


Cecil Adcox, Rear Commodore

Cecil and Barbara lived in Yorktown and keep their boat at their home. They have done extensive cruising on the Chesapeake Bay. They have found cruising with SYC over the past 10 years as exceptionally rewarding. Cecil worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for 44 years of which he spent 6 years as Vice President of Operations at Abu Dhabi Ship Building where he gained extensive experience in the Persian Gulf as sea trial Captain for 10 meter assault boats, 20 meter jet propulsion troop transport vessels and 64 meter landing crafts.  Cecil has served as a Trustee, member of the House and Grounds Committee, Entertainment Committee and Co-Chaired with Barbara the Summer Party, Christmas Party and a monthly dinner meeting.  Throughout the ten years he has enjoyed helping with many dinner meetings, special parties and the Junior Sailing Program.


Winnie Feldhaus, Secretary

Winnie and Tom are long time members of SYC.  They enjoy sailing and keep their Tartan 37 at the club.  Winnie’s first visit to SYC (and her first date with Tom) was as a crew member on Tom’s Columbia 26 during the 1985 Staggered Start race.  Winnie decided she enjoyed cruising more than racing and especially likes the companionship of SYC members during the club cruising weekends.  Winnie is a NASA retiree and has lived in Poquoson with Tom for the past twenty years



Jandy Strickland, Treasurer

Jandy Strickland and her husband, Randy, have lived in Williamsburg for 20 years.  Jandy is a retired special education teacher.  The Stricklands keep Zephyros, their 35 foot Tartan sailboat, at the Seaford Yacht Club.  Jandy is also Dinner Meeting Co-Chair.


Bobby James, Trustee 2015-2017

Bob and his wife Barbara have lived in the Seaford section of York County for 43 years.  Our favorite saying is “If you are lucky enough to live on the water you are lucky enough”.  After a 35-year career in education, 25 of those as a principal, Bob is the local Tow Boat U.S. captain. Helping stranded boaters is the most personally rewarding thing he has ever done.  It is also the most challenging and at times the most dangerous thing he has ever done.


Benjamin Huggin, Trustee 2015-2017

Ben and his wife of 25 years Cheryl, live in Poquoson and have a Catalina 30 "Horizons" they plan to keep at the club. Ben is a Vice President and Wealth Advisor at BB&T. Cheryl Works as the Quality Manager for Pathology and Laboratory Services at the VA Hospital in Hampton. They joined the club in late 2013. Their three children attended school in Poquoson where their two sons are in high school and their daughter is finishing a double major at ODU. Ben Sailed a 17 foot Mobjack growing up on the Potomac.


Jan Briede, Trustee 2016-2018

 Jan and his wife Donna joined the club in 2013.  They own a Catalina 25 which the keep at the club.  Jan has been sailing since boyhood and has crewed on various sailboats in the area during races.  After an international career Jan has settled down in Yorktown.  He works for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in Richmond as Senior Training Specialist and he travels throughout Virginia to train county and state personnel in erosion and sediment control and in stormwater management.  He also owns a one-person environmental consulting business and mostly conduct business out of the state of Virginia.


David Coffield, Trustee 2016-2018

David and his wife of 42 years, Marti have lived in Williamsburg for 25 years.  They joined the SYC in 2010, when Marti owned an 18’ Edel day sailor.  They are still looking for good 23’ Sonar.  David is a retired Navy submarine officer and completed another 12 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs as the Chief of Prosthetics at VAMC Hampton.  Marti recently retired from teaching In James City County and is now co-chairing the Dinner Committee.


Al Moore, Trustee 2017-2019


Dana Arenius, Trustee 2017-2019

Dana lives in Williamsburg and keeps his Cape Dory 31 sailboat, Kaunis, at the Club. Originally from Massachusetts, where he sailed out of Point Judith, RI, Dana moved to the area in 1988 and has been a club member since 2009. Dana is employed by Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News as a Principle Cryogenics Systems Engineer and has been a member of the Long Range Planning Committee and is currently the 2017 Sail Captain.


Malcolm Burgess, Past Commodore

Malcolm and his wife Merle live in York County and keep their Cape Dory 27 at the Club and 20 ft. Renken at their home. Malcolm spent 45 years as an Aeronautical engineer and pilot. He has been active with the Dock and House and Grounds Committees, served 3 years as a Trustee, several years as the Club Treasurer before becoming Rear Commodore.
